Issue #78

From Dubois County

Hello, Reader,

It seems that Abraham Lincoln enjoyed writing poems in his schoolbooks.

At least an upcoming auction for a single page from his "sum" book would have us believe that. A sum book is what was used by frontier school children to record their lessons.

This sample is considered one of his earliest writings. You have to admire the penmanship, too.

Along with the poem, it contains his math work, long division, on one side.

His stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnson, kept the book in which he wrote this. It's interesting to think that, for some reason, she decided to keep this book from his 12 months of formal school, and we fools (read the poem) can see Lincoln's doodles today.

I still have many drawings, pieces of artwork, and a massive diorama featuring a clay platypus that my son made.

He turned 31 last year.

Here is the auction shared with me by Chad Blessinger.

Starting bid is $300,000.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane

Monday, May 5, 2025 Issue #80 From Dubois County Happy Monday, Reader, The lawn-mowing story seemed to resonate with a couple of readers. I'm glad to hear I'm in good company with others who have set their lawn mowers on fire. News gathering is time-consuming. Today, the commissioners had a three-hour and twenty-minute meeting that I skimmed through looking for stories I felt were important to the public. You'll see one in today's headlines and likely others this week. I also had an hour-long...

Friday, May 2, 2025 Issue #79 Is today's sponsor From Dubois County The new pool in Jasper is expected to open later this month. It looks like it will be a lot of fun. Looking forward to anything this weekend, Reader? I'm really trying to get my yard mowed. I'm caught in this cycle of mowing half the yard. It's like what they say about mullets, "Business in the front, party in the back," but the party keeps moving. It started the other day when I only finished the front and couldn't get to...

Wednesday, April 30, 2025 Issue #77 From Dubois County Garrett Jones plays the White Rabbit in the Holy Trinity production of Alice @ Wonderland, The Musical. More photos here. Well, the forecast was a little off for today, Reader, That's okay. We are enjoying the sunshine and the continued growth in the wildflower meadow we planted. The little green sprouts are everywhere. Today, we wrote about a Jasper couple bringing their Colombian recipes to the community. I can't wait to try some of...
