Issue #76

From Dubois County

How was your Tuesday, Reader?

Can you feel Eli's explosive jump in that photo above, his shadow barely keeping up?

I was fortunate that right before I took this photo, I asked another photographer, Kylie Schepers, how to drag my shutter. I knew the basic concept, but since I had only done it once or twice, I couldn't remember the specific settings I needed to use.

She quickly told me, and I set up about halfway down the course, took a few practice swings with my camera, and then the race started.

I got lucky. Really, that was it.

But I had to try because you never know.

We don't normally cover sports, but Amy and I were there to take some photos for a story we're working on about Unified Track and Field.

I learned a bit about the program and will be following up with some athletes over the coming weeks. It was beautiful to see them compete.

Speaking to a couple of them, they expressed how excited they were about their ability and performance, no matter the outcome.

I also spoke to a freshman runner on the Jasper Boys' Track Team, and he told me how great he felt after his run. There was no competition for his event, so he wasn't under pressure to perform for anyone other than himself.

He said it was his best run all season.

If I missed my photo, you would have never known. I did it for myself anyway, and though I know other photographers could have done it better, I'm really happy with the outcome.

Tyla Rasche decided to try something new as well, and she's been pretty successful recently. The Northeast Dubois teacher is heading to the Miss Indiana contest in June. You can read her story in today's headlines.

She mentioned being inspired by Coach Jim Vivaldi's excellent speech at the ESPYs in 1993. He said a complete day includes laughter, thinking, and being moved to tears.

Attending the track meet and watching the Unified Track athletes compete was a blessing on all three fronts for me yesterday.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane

Hey Reader, The Azores recently came to mind after I watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations in which he visited one of the islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I was stationed there for 13 months at a Naval Security Group Activity. It was my first duty station after attending the Naval Law Enforcement Academy in San...
