Issue #290

From Dubois County

Happy Monday Reader,

It's Monday regardless of your attitude or feelings about it, so you may as well be happy.

Recently, I was asked about the need for substance use recovery services in the county. It was during a Q&A session for a grant for Next Step Recovery Home.

Caught a little off guard (we should all understand there is a substance use problem in our communities), I immediately thought of the first Chip Ceremony I attended.

It was for a story I was writing at the time, and one of the individuals I was writing about was receiving their one-year chip.

This is a huge milestone on the path to continued recovery.

I didn't know what to expect going into this event. What I found at Redemption Christian Church was a crowd of at least 300 friends, family members and fellow individuals in recovery filling the church.

They were there to celebrate these individuals receiving their chips, whether it was for one year or one month.

The energy of hope and pride in receiving these markers drew tears from my eyes as each was awarded and recognized.

It is a rite of passage to grant someone else in recovery your one-year chip when they achieve that. Many say they will never give it up — a friend of mine has been sober for over 21 years, and he still has his on his keychain — but some, though at first they may say they will never give it up, do end up finding the right person to support and pass it along to.

It is so communal. Imagine taking the trophy marking one of your greatest triumphs and handing it to someone else to mark their greatest triumph in the same battle.

When it happens, it is a beautiful moment.

But in that crowded room of love and joy, the deep need for help and hope was heavy.

From Dubois County with love.
