Issue #253

From Dubois County

Happy Monday, Reader,

I got in trouble the last week of boot camp because of a haircut.

As we were getting ready to graduate, I had someone trim up my neckline on the back of my head.

Navy regulations require a tapered cut at the back of your head. Unfortunately, this guy blocked off my hairline at my neck.

I remember my company commander yelling, "What did you do?" as he walked behind me during an inspection.

As punishment, he told me I had to do 100 push-ups every single time I saw him until we graduated.

I don't remember how many I did altogether.

He assigned it over the weekend, and it was Friday, so I thought the number might be limited, as our company commanders often didn't come in to check on us at this stage of boot camp.

We also had a lot of autonomy by this time since we were about to graduate.

But for some reason, he decided to spend a lot of time dropping by for our final weekend.

Folding laundry, and he would walk by my rack. Drop.

Come out of the head, and he'd be standing there. Drop.

Forming up for chow, there he was. Drop.

One night during my two-hour fire watch, he came by about five times. I am pretty sure just to see me immediately drop to the ground to pound another 100 out.

I also remember having a hard time holding my arms behind my back at parade rest during our graduation ceremony.

I'm reminded of this because later this week, Glenn Buechlein is leading a group to complete 214 push-ups in an hour, and some participants are aiming to hit 1,000.

From Dubois County with love.
