Issue #191

From Dubois County

Happy Monday, Reader,

Drinking espresso in Italy is where I began to love coffee.

I would dump spoonfuls of sugar into the little cups of espresso and creamy cappuccinos at the cafés in Naples where I was stationed for three years.

One morning, I got an espresso with one of our guards, a sailor who had retired in Naples and worked for the government now as a civilian contractor.

As I watched him drink his espresso straight without sugar, I commented that I'd never drink espresso or coffee without sugar.

He shook his head as he took a sip, looking at me ruefully.

I wondered how he could drink that cup of bitterness without sugar.

I quit adding sugar to my coffee about 20 years ago.

One time, I told this story of my experience to a barista as he made me an espresso. I was talking about espresso, but he reciprocated with his own story on absolutes never being absolute.

"My brother and I were playing Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64, and I told him that video games would never get better than this," he explained as he pulled my shots of coffee.

For those that don't know, that video game system came out in the mid-'90s, close to the same time I was sitting in a café in Italy with a guy who was likely as old as I am now.

Both of us were wrong.

Wednesday, November 26, 2025 Issue #208 is today's sponsor. From Dubois County Happy Thanksgiving, Reader, As the owner of the tire shop looked at the missing hub bolt on the rear wheel of our heavy-duty Ford flatbed, he put his hands on his hips and delivered the bad news. "I can't replace the tire," he said. We needed a new tire so we could use the truck to pick up 55-gallon barrels to level houseboats on Seattle's Lake Union (but that's a different story). We explained that we were only...
