Issue #32

From Dubois County

I can't believe it's almost March, Reader,

Which means the local festivals that define spring are about to kick off this Friday when Ireland's St. Patrick's Day Festival has the Light Up Ireland Kick Off Party.

That reminds me of a moment at the Celestine Street Fest last year.

Bowls of haystacks were wandering around in everyone's hands, and I could see the multistage process that started up by the church. There, four to five people rapidly fed potatoes onto a spinning contraption that cut them into thin sliced piles of pre-haystack material.

A fellow that seemed to be in charge (at least I assumed since he was loading the potato peeling contraption) looked at me quizzically so I said, "I figured I'd come back to see how the sausage was made."

Little did I know he was a very literal minded fellow and my idiom hadn't landed very well. He stopped moving potatoes through the peeler, cocked his head, squinted one eye and looked at me like I was an idiot.

I mean, clearly, there was no sausage in sight.

I quickly said I knew there wasn't actual sausage, I just wanted to see how the haystacks were made. Confirming that I wasn't a deranged sausage seeking lunatic, he commenced the peeling process again.

All that to say that today we had to work through some kinks in the newsletter machine. Many of you signed up but didn't get confirmation emails, so you haven't received our newsletter. Alas, I won't bore you with how the sausage, ahem, newsletter is made.

We think we have it fixed though.

Do us a favor and share it with some friends if you don't mind.

From Dubois County with love.

Monday, October 27, 2025 Issue #187 From Dubois County Ron and Cindy Harris shared their experience as Dubois County CASAs with us in a story we published today. Happy Monday, Reader, One time, Amy picked up our nephew, and he was really hungry, so she stopped by McDonald's to pick him up a sixer of chicken nuggets. She got him situated in his car seat with the little foldable cardboard container — ketchup on one side, nuggets on the other--before pulling away from the restaurant. As he was...

Friday, October 24, 2025 Issue #186 From Dubois County Dustin and Denver. Happy Friday, Reader, Dustin Betz is the type of guy who will commend your 10-minute-per-mile running pace and run along beside you while you do it, though if he wanted to, he could likely run twice as fast. At the Ferdinand Heartland, Dustin rode his bicycle from Celestine and then ran the race pushing his son, Denver, in a stroller. I think he finished 23rd. We've become friends through a bible study group I am in...

Thursday, October 23, 2025 Issue #186 From Dubois County Property owners and supporters of the Stop the Mid-States Corridor group gathered outside the Jasper Middle School during INDOT's open house on Wednesday evening. Good afternoon, Reader, I'm almost certain that I will get grief about the letters to the editor we published today. Regardless, both sides have the right to their opinions, and, as one letter points out, we live in a society that allows us to express them. These voices are...
