Issue #251

From Dubois County

Good afternoon, Reader,

I recently saw an Instagram reel featuring an interview with an actor. (I know I just said I was busy today, and now I'm telling you a story about scrolling Instagram, bear with me.)

Actor Gabriel Basso said he deleted Instagram after seeing someone post an image of Mount Everest's summit. Essentially, he said that he didn't deserve to see that view, knowing that the journey to the top of Everest is littered with the bodies of individuals who didn't make it.

I like Instagram. I do. But I'm also cognizant of its manipulation.

I also ignore my knowledge of that manipulation and scroll through reels designed to keep me enthralled. Mine are largely about pickleball, dad jokes, funny kids and animals, movie trailers and some stand-up comedy.

I like looking at these things, and I like seeing cool things on Instagram.

But, to a certain extent, Basso has a good point. He didn't earn the right to see that view.

And when you put that view on a screen the size of your hand, it loses some of the awe.

It's easy to swipe to the next view.

And the next.

The next.

Next.

Until there is nothing that leaves you awestruck.

From Dubois County with love.
