Issue #233

From Dubois County

Hey Reader,

Sorry.

Yes, sorry.

I published a story in a hurry yesterday as I headed out the door, and it wasn't polished; it had errors — grammatical and otherwise. I am sorry.

I fixed it.

Unfortunately, it was the story I did on Mayor Vonderheide.

That's what I get for rushing.

On another note, the Optimist Club of Jasper is celebrating its 50th anniversary this Saturday. Congrats. They are publishing some fun photos on their Facebook page, and we shared some in the story. Check it out.

Also, Jasper Arts is honoring former director Kit Miracle with a display of her work. She passed away recently.

A long time ago, I learned that she was an Amazon reviewer and wrote a brief story about how she got first access to new products and books to review. Amazon would send them to her and she could keep them in exchange for the "official" reviews.

Here is that story.

Have a great day.

From Dubois County with love.

Advertsiment

I got this email today in response to yesterday's intro.

Game on Friday? You mean on Saturday when #5 Purdue plays Penn State?

As an Indiana native and Purdue grad, I recently moved back in-state after being gone for 40 years. Everything is backwards. Purdue's football team and Indiana's basketball team are poor, but Purdue's basketball and Indiana's football teams are contending for national championships in the same calendar year.

I will admit being proud of IU's football success, mostly due to the personal quality of Mendosa and Knight-like attutude of Coach Cignetti. Yes, I'm a Knight fan. Knight would be proud of Coach Painter.

Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026 Issue #237 From Dubois County Happy midweek, Reader, There is a dog-powered butter churn at the Dubois County Museum. It's not small. Imagine an inclined track about half the size of one found on your average small trackhoe. It's attached to a flywheel that works the dasher on the nearby churn. Apparently, the apparatus was patented in 1871 in upstate New York and was marketed to dairy farmers for a short time. I am working on a story about the museum and have spent...

Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2026 Issue #236 is today's sponsor. From Dubois County Contractors had a great view of downtown Jasper from the Siebert building this afternoon. Good afternoon, Reader, I spent three hours in interviews today with about eight people for three different stories. All of them on different subjects. But all of them shared a commonality in building community. I love seeing these themes woven through these different stories. We are made for community in whatever form it takes....

Monday, Jan. 12, 2026 Issue #235 is today's sponsor. From Dubois County Vance Webb, 8, of Jasper, points at the two model trains as they meet on their circular route in the Dubois County Museum's display. Vance is a train enthusiast, and he and his family were exploring the museum Saturday morning. Hey Reader, I'm an experiential learner, I joked with my wife. I was trying to explain why I made a heavy wager on a round in my second official game of Cinch. It was to see the fail points in...
