Issue #394

From Dubois County

Good afternoon, Reader,

Last week Amy and I took a quick getaway to Louisville, and as usual, we didn't really have a plan other than hit two of our favorite spots there and enjoy the sunshine.

I started looking for things to do and found a place where we could take a class to create something with glass, and we ended up at Flame Run, a glassblowing and fabrication company located appropriately in the Glassworks Building downtown.

It was truly amazing to see what they could do with glass. An example some may know is the large glass sculpture on the wall below the mezzanine in the main entry to Deaconess Gateway. He is renowned for this design, and it appears throughout his gallery alongside many other stunning glass pieces.

While we were there, we watched a couple work with the artists in the workshop as they created a glass paperweight and vase. While we watched, the glass studio owner came out and struck up a conversation with us.

I'm a journalist and ask a lot of questions, but honestly, anytime I come back from an interview, Amy always has a good question about my subject that I didn't think to ask.

All that to say she was very inquisitive about the process, and the owner, Brook Forrest White Jr., spent a lot of time answering our questions.

Then he told us to come into the back with him and gave us a tour of the studio and different areas of the workshop, showing us prototypes they were working on and projects they were especially proud of.

Those included a special award for the Muhammad Ali Center, the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Lifetime Achievement Award, which features his thumbprint etched into a large blown-glass piece. On Mr. White's desk is an image of him taking a wax imprint of Ali's thumb.

Mr. White, a master artisan with decades of experience, spent about an hour and a half pulling us along from one cool piece or process to the next.

I like to think that I broke the ice and opened up this great experience with the question I ask most of the subjects I interview.

"What is a truly affirming moment for you in what you do?"

Without a beat, he answered, "When I know a piece is sold."

And we all laughed.
