Issue #318

From Dubois County

Good afternoon, Reader,

Sometimes, when I am writing down the names of the people I run into while covering an event or conducting an interview, sometimes, they watch me closely to ensure I get the spelling right. And usually, they see what my hand is doing and either correct me or repeat the letter I seem to have seemed to miss, over and over again.

It's fine. I want to get things correct. It is really important to me.

My handwriting in my little notebooks is atrocious. It mainly consists of me squirreling lines in something that slightly resembles the letters you are telling me, but only if they were written by said squirrel avoiding my car using the same instincts it has to avoid most predators.

In my mind, though, I am making little notes of inflection that actually make those meandering lines make sense.

But, for the person spelling their name, it is just meaningless scribbling.

The lines make sense to me because of what I was thinking when I made them. My notebook isn't a record of letters. It's a record of attention.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane
