Issue #357

From Dubois County

Happy Wednesday, Reader,

The Wallflowers are playing at the Lincoln Amphitheatre this Saturday. I was stationed in Italy when I first heard "One Headlight". My friend, Brandon Zumbano, had been home to Philadelphia on leave, and he returned with the CD, "Bringing Down the Horse".

This was long before any streaming, so this taste of American pop rock music fed a desire for a bit of our own culture.

We played it over and over and over.

Three songs off that record got Grammy nods, and 'One Headlight' still sits at No. 58 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest pop songs.

For me, the music takes me back to living in a barracks with one of my best friends and holding onto a bit of the U.S. on a five-CD turntable.

As the band plays through that iconic album this Saturday, I might be a little bit jealous of those of you with tickets to the sold-out show.

From Dubois County with love.
