Hello Reader,

I remember watching the television broadcast of what was going on in New York City and thinking about the time difference between there and Seattle as I planned our workday on Sept. 11, 2001. I looked at the clock as the footage played, and another plane hit the second tower. In my mind, I am always looking up at that clock in the basement of the home where we were living in Seattle.

My experience is mine, though the shared reality of that moment is part of our country's shared identity.

Like maybe many of you, I don't really know what to do about today. How do you make sense of the senseless? How do you commemorate it?

I don't have an answer. Here we are, 25 years after that day, and I still see that clock on the wall and remember the feeling over the next hours, days and months as we reeled from this moment.

Twenty-five years is a long time. It is also no time at all.

Humans of New York has a series of posts today from an individual struggling with this same thing. He was there. He ran in with some friends. He was the only one to make it out.
