Issue #159

From Dubois County

Hey Reader,

In talking with Speedy, as with other veterans I meet, I enjoy the dialogue that comes from a shared military background.

Our services are distinctly different, his marked by war, injury, and loss, mine by relative peace and friendship, but still common in the grinding gears of an organization designed to homogenize U.S. citizens into a warfighting machine.

He shared a few of his stories with me, much like the many veterans who visit him.

Though this didn't make it into today's write-up, he mentioned that introducing himself as Speedy when he was confined to a wheelchair after being injured brought a lot of laughter from his fellow servicemembers. "You sure are, hahahaha."

The funny thing is that Speedy is his last name. It's combined with his wife's name, but in the military, no one knew what to call him, so he just told everyone to call him Speedy.

His buddies also got him a parting gift when he was medically retired. Being stationed in Hawaii, members of his unit bought him an Oahu spearhead mounted on a plaque that read "For the most handicapable Marine. When your legs don't work like they used to."

Funny.

But I agree with Speedy on something he said a couple of times. He doesn't really like the "Thank you for your service" platitudes he hears from civilians.

He wishes more people would ask him about his service to help them better understand it and him.

From Dubois County with love.

Thursday, September 4, 2025 Issue #158 From Dubois County Happy Thursday, Reader, I have read numerous articles about AI and its impact on various industries. A concern about AI is the amount of energy being used by these data centers as they process all of our inquiries. Through my reading and learning about the water usage of these inquiries, I have felt a little guilty about some of my early questions. For example, when ChatGPT was first introduced, the discussion and outrage over a...
