Issue #158

From Dubois County

Happy Thursday, Reader,

I have read numerous articles about AI and its impact on various industries.

A concern about AI is the amount of energy being used by these data centers as they process all of our inquiries. Through my reading and learning about the water usage of these inquiries, I have felt a little guilty about some of my early questions.

For example, when ChatGPT was first introduced, the discussion and outrage over a roundabout being planned for Bretzville Junction had just begun.

I asked ChatGPT to come up with a list of benefits of a roundabout, but to do so in the style of the King James Version of the Bible.

"Verily, I say unto thee, the roundabout is a blessing unto the wayfarer. For it bringeth forth order where once there was confusion, and it guideth the traveler in paths of safety."

It continued in that same vein for several passages. I thought it was pretty funny.

Anyway, then we hear about the tremendous amount of water being used to cool these data centers. It seems pretty bad, but, as in many cases, the sound bites about how bad it is were made without much nuance or comparative value.

Something can sound bad at face value, but when considered in the context of a larger picture, it can lose some of its impact.

I read this article about AI water usage on Monday: https://indianacapitalchronicle.com/2025/09/02/ai-has-a-hidden-water-cost-%E2%88%92-heres-how-to-calculate-yours/

It's a good article on the issue, but interestingly, at the end, the author points out that while AI uses over 100 million liters of water a day, Americans use about 34 BILLION liters of water a day just watering their lawns.

Hmmm.

From Dubois County with love.
