Issue #119

From Dubois County

Happy Fourth of July, Reader,

Today was rather busy as I received a call about a golf scramble at Sultan's Run on the way to an appointment in Jasper.

I had planned on coming right back to my home office to finish up the stories on yesterday's Mid-States Corridor court proceedings.

With the call, though, I decided to make sure I captured a couple of photos of the tee off at the scramble, so I decided to stay in town and work at The Next Chapter.

There are many reasons to like The Next Chapter—great atmosphere, welcoming staff, interesting conversations to eavesdrop on, and of course, coffee and books.

But sometimes something special happens.

I've witnessed it a couple of times now.

Folks getting married at the courthouse will stop in to sit on the sofa under the sign "Begin Your Next Chapter".

That happened today. We were working at a table when a group walked in. I saw a bouquet and everyone's smiles, and realized it was a wedding moment.

I always have a camera on me, and as I watched them take photos with their phones. Now, camera phones are fantastic pieces of technology, but they have limits compared to a full-frame digital camera. I figured I'd give them something they could put on their wall, if they'd let me.

I picked up my camera and just asked if they would like me to take a few photos. They were okay with it, so Amy and I rearranged some furniture and took photos of them as a bride and groom, as well as a family photo.

They went on their way to "begin their next chapter," and I quickly edited the photos and sent them over.

The bride was super appreciative, and I hope that I gave them something to mark this new chapter.

But really, it was just a blessing to witness someone's joy and have a small part in preserving it.

I hope you have a great holiday and weekend.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane
