Hey Reader,

Nancy Eckerle rang a bell as she welcomed students to Jasper High School today with her handmade sign.

She’s a board member of the Dubois County Coalition for Adolescent Resilience and Empowerment Strategies (CARES), a group dedicated to preventing substance use and supporting mental health among our local children.

The bell she was ringing happened to be over a hundred years old. Her grandmother used to ring it at one of the county’s single-room schoolhouses.

It seemed appropriate for today as Dubois County CARES stepped up again this year to meet students with a bit of encouragement and cheer as they began the new school year.

The project began after surveyed students said they sometimes didn't feel noticed or appreciated by the community.

It's a small gesture from community members, teachers and others recognizing students with a "You've got this!," "Welcome Back!" and "You Matter!"
