Issue #146

From Dubois County

Good Monday afternoon, Reader,

I have one wisdom tooth. It's on my mind because I had to go to the dentist today.

My dentist is pretty good at conversations, although they are obviously one-sided a lot of the time. But if it gets too silent as he's working away on my teeth, I like to give him things to talk about.

Today, as the U2 song, "Where the Streets Have No Name" came across his speaker, between swishing/spitting, I mentioned that it had to be at least 40 years old (38 actually).

As he began to work on my teeth again, he started talking about the lyrical genius of U2, which subsequently led him down an expounding path on who he thought were good performers or instrumentalists.

When I surfaced from another swish/spit, I mentioned I was answering him from a point he made early in his monologue. He laughed and said, "Yeah, they teach us about this in dental school."

But I digress.

In my youth, when I had my wisdom teeth removed, for some reason, the dentist felt the one was going to be fine and left it in.

No big deal until I was in a medical exam at Naval Recruit Training Station (boot camp) in Orlando, Florida. The dentist there told me they would need to remove that tooth so I could volunteer for submarine duty.

Why? I timidly asked.

You can't get dental work done while you are underwater for months at a time.

But it's a voluntary duty?

Yes.

I don't plan on volunteering for submarine duty; I'll keep the tooth.

They let me keep it.

It's never been a problem, but it isn't easy to floss.

And as my current dentist likes to say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

From Dubois County with love.
