Issue #230

From Dubois County

Happy New Year, Reader,

Gosh, it's the first day of the first full week of the new year, and there are already some big changes in Jasper's leadership.

If you didn't see, Mayor Dean Vonderheide announced he is stepping down at the end of March. I met with the mayor this afternoon and had a great conversation with him on his decision to step away from a role he's held for the past seven years.

I'll have that story tomorrow; there is a brief write-up of his announcement that went out today.

On another political note, we are heading into an election year, and so far, we've got three candidates running in the primary for Dubois County Sheriff. I also received a notice from a new candidate for the county recorder position.

I think it will be an interesting election year on the local ballot. Here are the offices up for election.

  • County offices: Circuit Court Judge, Prosecutor, County Clerk, Auditor, Recorder, Sheriff, Commissioner – District 2, County Council – Districts 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  • Township offices: Bainbridge, Boones, Cass, Columbia, Ferdinand, Hall, Harbison, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Marion, Patoka Township Trustees and Board members.
  • Precinct Committeemen and State Convention Delegates: Democratic Precinct Committeemen, Republican and Democratic Convention Delegates.

Have a great day.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane

Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026 Issue #237 From Dubois County Happy midweek, Reader, There is a dog-powered butter churn at the Dubois County Museum. It's not small. Imagine an inclined track about half the size of one found on your average small trackhoe. It's attached to a flywheel that works the dasher on the nearby churn. Apparently, the apparatus was patented in 1871 in upstate New York and was marketed to dairy farmers for a short time. I am working on a story about the museum and have spent...

Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2026 Issue #236 is today's sponsor. From Dubois County Contractors had a great view of downtown Jasper from the Siebert building this afternoon. Good afternoon, Reader, I spent three hours in interviews today with about eight people for three different stories. All of them on different subjects. But all of them shared a commonality in building community. I love seeing these themes woven through these different stories. We are made for community in whatever form it takes....

Monday, Jan. 12, 2026 Issue #235 is today's sponsor. From Dubois County Vance Webb, 8, of Jasper, points at the two model trains as they meet on their circular route in the Dubois County Museum's display. Vance is a train enthusiast, and he and his family were exploring the museum Saturday morning. Hey Reader, I'm an experiential learner, I joked with my wife. I was trying to explain why I made a heavy wager on a round in my second official game of Cinch. It was to see the fail points in...
