Issue #187

From Dubois County

Happy Monday, Reader,

One time, Amy picked up our nephew, and he was really hungry, so she stopped by McDonald's to pick him up a sixer of chicken nuggets.

She got him situated in his car seat with the little foldable cardboard container — ketchup on one side, nuggets on the other--before pulling away from the restaurant.

As he was sitting there with a nug in hand, dipping and munching away, someone stopped suddenly in front of Amy, forcing her to hit the brakes quickly. The little nugget box immediately slid off his happy lap onto the car floor, spilling the five remaining nuggets out.

"Oh no, not floor nuggets!" he immediately wailed.

She was able to placate him and get some new non-floor nuggets, but we still use this exclamation today to express our deep disappointment over trivial problems in our lives.

Dog pukes on the floor. "Oh no, not floor nuggets!" (I realized that one may be too on the nose as I wrote it.)

Stub your toe. "Oh no, not floor nuggets!"

Forget your wallet. "Floor nuggets!"

You get the idea.

Another great one from my nephew involved his early appreciation for honey mustard.

Again, chicken nugs were his thing, but early on, when he was about three or so, he really liked to dip them in honey mustard.

We use the same brand for honey mustard and spicy mustard.

One evening, after his first big bite of a freshly dipped nug, he chewed for a moment, squinted and matter-of-factly said, "Wrong mustard."

Someone had inadvertently squirted the spicy mustard on his plate.

He hasn't used mustard since, and we now routinely say "Wrong mustard" when we make mistakes like picking up the wrong tool, adding the wrong ingredient to a recipe, or catching a typo or error after we publish something--though that might be more of a floor nugget issue.

Hope you have a great week.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane

Friday, October 24, 2025 Issue #186 From Dubois County Dustin and Denver. Happy Friday, Reader, Dustin Betz is the type of guy who will commend your 10-minute-per-mile running pace and run along beside you while you do it, though if he wanted to, he could likely run twice as fast. At the Ferdinand Heartland, Dustin rode his bicycle from Celestine and then ran the race pushing his son, Denver, in a stroller. I think he finished 23rd. Good afternoon, Reader, I'm almost certain that I will get grief about the letters to the editor we published today. Regardless, both sides have the right to their opinions, and, as one letter points out, we live in a society that allows us to express them. These voices are...
