Issue #186

From Dubois County

Happy Friday, Reader,

Dustin Betz is the type of guy who will commend your 10-minute-per-mile running pace and run along beside you while you do it, though if he wanted to, he could likely run twice as fast.

At the Ferdinand Heartland, Dustin rode his bicycle from Celestine and then ran the race pushing his son, Denver, in a stroller. I think he finished 23rd.

We've become friends through a bible study group I am in with him.

I've found him to be a really nice guy. And it seems that kindness runs through his family. Earlier this year, when I said I was planting a meadow, Dustin's mom, Connie, gave him some tips to pass along to me so it would do well.

Apparently, the Betz flower gardens and watermelons are legendary.

Last week, Dustin headed down to Australia to compete in the 2025 World Triathlon Championship. A triathlon is a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km bike ride, and a 10 km run.

He was joined by his wife, Adria, and sons, Denver and Forrest, and parents, Vic and Connie Betz.

Dustin said he wasn't looking for recognition and pointed out that he wasn't competing against the professionals in the race.

A triathlon is a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km bike ride, and a 10 km run.

He finished 191st out of 1,123 participants from 78 countries, 182nd out of 654 males and 29th out of 64 in his age group. And he qualified to compete in Spain next year.

Dustin said it was a great experience and that he set a personal best record with his finish.

"It was pretty special racing against people from all around the world, he said. "78 countries and a multitude of languages that I couldn’t understand."

He really enjoyed the Parade of Nations, similar to the Olympics, that kicked off the event.

He and his family really enjoyed the country.

"All in all the biggest standout to me was the people. Aussies are some of the friendliest people, and I love their accent!"

He added that he wanted to give a shout-out to Maria Gramelspacher, who coached him for the race through her coaching business called Faith2Tri.

Have a great weekend.

From Dubois County with love.

Monday, October 27, 2025 Issue #187 From Dubois County Ron and Cindy Harris shared their experience as Dubois County CASAs with us in a story we published today. Happy Monday, Reader, One time, Amy picked up our nephew, and he was really hungry, so she stopped by McDonald's to pick him up a sixer of chicken nuggets. She got him situated in his car seat with the little foldable cardboard container — ketchup on one side, nuggets on the other--before pulling away from the restaurant. As he was...

Thursday, October 23, 2025 Issue #186 From Dubois County Property owners and supporters of the Stop the Mid-States Corridor group gathered outside the Jasper Middle School during INDOT's open house on Wednesday evening. Good afternoon, Reader, I'm almost certain that I will get grief about the letters to the editor we published today. Regardless, both sides have the right to their opinions, and, as one letter points out, we live in a society that allows us to express them. These voices are...

Wednesday, October 22, 2025 Issue #185 is today's sponsor From Dubois County Alivia Conner, 8, rode her bike to Parker Park in Jasper on Wednesday. Her siblings and step-siblings joined her for the quick trip from their nearby house. Hey Reader, I know it's gotta be weird for someone to be driving along and suddenly stop to jump out and talk to you. But a lot of times, that's how it happens. Like today, I was driving around Jasper and saw the group of siblings setting off on their bikes. The...
