Good afternoon, Reader,

I've spent an inordinate amount of time researching local Flock cameras today.

Here are a couple of things I found out about the ones in Dubois County.

There are 21 cameras operated by local agencies in Dubois County.

They take pictures of passing cars from which they can determine color, make and model, as well as license plate number. They can't always, though; sometimes they are affected by the weather (e.g., if it's raining, the image can be blurry).

That information or photo is deleted after 30 days.

Local officers can access that information, but they are recorded when they do so, and they have to enter a case number or reason for seeking out the information.

Those requests are audited.

They have been used locally to help find a missing person, arrest a murder suspect, stop a multistate theft operation, determine how a business sign was damaged, solve a snatch-and-grab incident at the Tri-County YMCA, and much more.
