Issue #175

From Dubois County

Hey Reader,

The best class I ever sat through was taught by an EOD instructor in the Navy.

EOD stands for Explosive Ordinance Disposal.

I was riveted by this guy's ability to command a room as he taught about disposing of explosive ordnance.

I don't know why this came to mind today.

Except I went to the awards banquet last night and heard an amazing speaker, Justin Maust. He was pretty passionate about his message, and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much that I didn't spend any time doing journalism stuff while he spoke.

Meaning, instead of listening for the audience; I listened for myself.

Maust spoke about excellence and the incremental increases that lead to maximizing your impact. He also discussed the long-term implications of the decisions we make.

I think that is why the EOD was so good. He understood the implications of every decision he made in his job, and he had to execute it excellently or face serious consequences.

I'm not sure if he was better at contemplating his mortality than the average person, but I believe we gain clarity on what truly matters, inspiring a desire to live more authentically and to cherish the fleeting nature of life. He seemed to exemplify these attributes in the hour class that I had with him.

Maust even shared a story during his presentation last night that highlighted the fragile and miraculous nature of our existence.

Both speakers were able to make their messages personal, urgent and unforgettable. And maybe that’s the lesson— we should want to live with that kind of clarity and impact, in whatever we do.

See you tomorrow.

From Dubois County with love.

What's shakin', Reader, Our dog either absolutely loves you or is completely apathetic to you. There is no in between. And she doesn't really interact with any other dogs. Tuesday, September 30, 2025 Issue #174 From Dubois County Hey Reader, There is a trail that runs along the Red River in the gorge where we went for our getaway these past few days. As we were returning from a long hike along the trail back to our car, we saw a large group of young men climbing a rock across the river from us. Fortunately, the trail provided a clear view of their antics and a few well-placed roots as a bench to watch from. After a few moments of sitting there watching them...
