I attended a session of the Dubois County Drug Court last week. It is held in Dubois County's Superior Court under Judge Anthony Quinn.

Family, friends and supporters were on hand to witness and celebrate two individuals graduating from the program. I was there to witness one of those graduations.

First, Judge Quinn called all the participants up to review their progress/ He asked them what was important to them and if there was something they had heard recently in a meeting that had stuck with them.

As an icebreaker, he also asked what three items they would take if they were stranded on a deserted island. Those answers were fun.

Each individual received some acknowledgment of their progress, and most were rewarded with a small gift recognizing their successful time in the program. There was no lack of clapping from the attending crowd, no matter how far along each individual was in their journey.

The graduation was a great moment for Gavin, who is pictured above. But he also said that it was a scary moment; the guardrails of drug court were no longer there. Judge Quinn also acknowledged that the graduation was not an end, but represented another beginning.

I took this to mean that these steps forward were somewhat into the unknown for Gavin and his fellow graduate.

It reminded me of this line from Wendell Berry's poem, "Our Real Work".

"It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work."

Fortunately, Gavin has built a network of people supporting him as he takes his next steps into new unknowns.
