Issue #140

From Dubois County

Howdy, Reader,

A former editor at The Huntingburg Press, Jim Ward, wrote a column on the weekly pool tournament at Ron’s Place. I don’t remember much about it except that it was light-hearted and Ward would insert quotes from the winners, including himself if he happened to win.

I wondered about doing that for pickleball. Maybe not as cool as a pool, but I thought it might be fun.

Amy and I play pretty regularly. Wednesdays have been spent with a group of about 12 over the past few weeks thanks to Liz Gutgsell, who helped kick it off in July.

But with the constant rotation of players in these matches, it’s hard to figure out a good angle on a weekly summary. Plus, I can’t even tell you what anyone did since I’m usually in the midst of a game myself.

Regardless, it’s been fun getting to know new people out there. Father Anthony and his wicked fast returns, Bart and his infuriating lobs (I hope you read this), Mel’s overhand slams, Rhonda’s crazy serve, David’s quick hands, and so many more distinct players at various skill levels.

Though I love some good competition on the court, I also love the camaraderie and laughter–there’s a lot of laughter.

I saw a quote the other day that, on average, children laugh about 300 times a day, whereas an adult only laughs 15 to 20 times a day.

My wife said pickleball helps improve that average for adults.

Have a great weekend.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane

Monday, August 11, 2025 Issue #141 From Dubois County Late summer truth on Chestnut Street in Huntingburg. Hello, Reader, Over the weekend, my wife and I watched an interesting film, The Life of Chuck. It's hard to write a compelling description for this movie without giving it all away. But for us, it was impactful. We watched it on Friday night, and were still talking about its central truth on the way to church on Sunday morning. I’m still thinking about it today, not just for its plot,...
