Issue #102

From Dubois County

Hello Reader,

This didn't make it into today's story about immigration fears in our community, but Rossina mentioned growing up in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, a Mexican city bordering Eagle Pass, Texas.

She said it was a uniquely multicultural environment, but they didn't view it as multicultural because it was just the way things were. The proximity meant there was a certain fluidity between the two communities.

"There are some times, for example, that gas is cheaper on one side or the other side. So you see the movement from all of the Mexicans to go get gas in the U.S., all of the American citizens to come get gas in Mexico."

As she worked to become a naturalized citizen, a process that took more than five years, her history of documented movement between countries proved helpful during her citizenship interview.

During the interview, they asked her why her passport indicated that she had crossed the border 23 times in a short period. "For gas, for food, for entertainment," she told them.

Take some time to read the story today about the difficulties our local Latino community is facing.

It's also interesting how these stories align with upcoming events. The story wasn't planned in conjunction with the upcoming event in Ferdinand on race relations.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane

Thursday, June 19, 2025 Issue #108 is today's sponsor Amy's Meadow. From Dubois County Hey Reader, Karen and Jose Flores walked me through their entrepreneurial journey today. They own Mi Pais (My Country) Market in Huntingburg and purchased Los Dos Charros, one of Dubois County's first Mexican restaurants. It sometimes strikes me as absurd that I can walk up to someone and ask them their story, and they will tell me. The restaurant wasn't open when I got there, but I could hear voices and...

I really want you to read the story about the Regional Wellness Center because it's informative and may help clarify what's going on. And then you can share it with your...
