Issue #65

From Dubois County

Hope you've had a good week, Reader,

"I don't know what to write," I yelled from my desk today.

"I've heard that same statement come from that room many times," my wife responded. "But not always from you."

She was right. I laughed, remembering hearing the same from our son many days.

I made him write something every day during the school year.

The rules: He could write anything he wanted, including how much he hated being made to write something each day. As he got older, I gave it a length of one page in his notebook.

I didn't care what it was about nor how big he wrote (no skipping lines).

It didn't matter. Just write something.

Writing is thinking.

Even as I write this, the words and sentence structure constantly change in my mind; there's no goal but to come to some universal truth that ties this nostalgic memory into some final perfect bow, a top of a gift for you, the reader, and maybe some insight for me.

I don't think it's going to work out, though. But, the wheels are turning.

In having him write something each day, I felt it would teach him to be reflective, observant and creative. He is all of those things.

He is all of those things better than me.

He still writes in notebooks. The other day, he sent me a long text message explaining why a certain melody reminded him of me and his childhood.

It was beautiful. I want to frame it.

Maybe this isn't what you signed up for in the newsletter.
