Issue #208

From Dubois County

Happy Thanksgiving, Reader,

As the owner of the tire shop looked at the missing hub bolt on the rear wheel of our heavy-duty Ford flatbed, he put his hands on his hips and delivered the bad news.

"I can't replace the tire," he said.

We needed a new tire so we could use the truck to pick up 55-gallon barrels to level houseboats on Seattle's Lake Union (but that's a different story).

We explained that we were only using it to pick up and haul empty plastic drums. He was unmoved by the impact on our fledgling dive company.

"There are seven bolts holding that wheel on there," my friend, the owner of the dive company, told the tire guy. "What's the worst that could happen?"

Immediately, as if he had been thinking the same thing, the tire guy said, "What if I put a new tire on there and one day you're driving through downtown Seattle and what if it falls off, and what if the truck swerves into another truck carrying explosives, causing an explosion that destroys the downtown."

We couldn't "but if" his "what if."

We didn't get a new tire, but I've been thinking about this interaction recently after hearing a Holland Town Council member say he believes in the "What-if Monster".

Happy Thanksgiving.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane

BTW: The story isn't meant to imply anything about the reason behind the town council member's statement on what-if monsters.
