Issue #171

From Dubois County

Happy Wednesday, Reader,

We completed a CPR course last night at the Huntingburg Citizen Academy.

Right at the beginning of the class, the department got paged to an emergency. The six or so firefighters who were there to help certify us in CPR ran out the back door of the classroom. As one was exiting, I heard them say, "CPR in progress."

Chief Heim said they like to hear that when they get called to an emergency involving an unresponsive individual. He knows that the person has a great likelihood of surviving.

All the training was great, but I really appreciated the hands-on with the AED. Over the past few years, these devices have been propagating throughout our community. If someone is having an emergency in a public space around here, more than likely there is a nearby AED.

You may hear about these devices and understand how they work, but being able to go through the process of applying one step by step, even in a training session, is an invaluable experience.

Again, if you have access to the training, I highly recommend it. You never know when it will come in handy.

Admittedly, when the instructor told us that the American Red Cross listed songs with the proper beats per minute for administering CPR, I immediately thought of The Office and the Bee Gees' "Staying Alive."

Here are a few songs that you can perform CPR to ensure you get the appropriate number of compressions per minute (100 to 120).

Dua Lipa has three songs on the list: "Break my Heart," Dance the Night Away," and "Levitating."

Justin Bieber has two: "Love Yourself" and "Sorry."

Feeling more Folky? Noah Kahan's "Stick Season" works.

Post Malone's "Circles" is on there.

Elderly pop punk rocker? "In Too Deep" by Sum 41.

Feeling more Latin? "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello works.

You also have the standby of "Another One Bites the Dust", but probably sing that one to yourself.

Personally, I am going to stick with the 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and....

From Dubois County with love.

Hey Reader, The best class I ever sat through was taught by an EOD instructor in the Navy. EOD stands for Explosive Ordinance Disposal. What's shakin', Reader, Our dog either absolutely loves you or is completely apathetic to you. There is no in between. And she doesn't really interact with any other dogs. She also doesn't bark at anyone unless she is at our home. There, she selectively protects her fiefdom with barks at passing walkers. I say selectively because it appears to be applied...
