From Dubois County

It's Friday, Reader,

As I was talking with Chris Fehribach at the Overdose Vigil last night about Narcotics Anonymous meetings in Dubois County, a woman walked over carrying a handful of Narcan packets.

She had just heard Chris speak about the meetings—which were still somewhat unknown in the area—and urged him to ensure the Narcan reached those who needed it. Her voice caught in a sob as she turned away.

Her name is Marlanna. I met her at last year’s vigil, her first time attending. She brought a photo of her son, Andrew Dodd, who died in 2020 from an overdose. He was only 20. Several people at the vigil last night carried their own connections to him.

The ripples of substance use disorder move broadly and deeply through our community.

I know this isn’t the intro you want to read heading into a holiday weekend. But, in my own experience with loved ones struggling with addiction, holidays often come with phone calls for help, ER visits, or something else in the cycle of substance use disorder.

Attendees to last night's vigil were allowed to speak, and one speaker’s words struck me as I listened to the brave folks baring their souls at the microphone. Rhythmically, he repeated: “Man, they love you so. Don’t let them go.”

He seemed to be speaking to those isolated and hurting, reminding them that they are loved, that a community waits to help them heal.

But I also heard it as a message for families: don’t give up on your loved ones. They love you. They need you.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane
