Issue #152

From Dubois County

Hey Reader,

I enjoy sitting on my porch and watching the sunrise in the morning. This morning, I noticed my breath steaming in the cool air. Gosh, is summer nearly over already?

Today, we wrote about the concerns Coroner Katie Schuck has for the future of her department, as well as how busy they've become with the increasing number of transfers at our local hospital.

Plus, we had an email conversation with Brent Rasche. The longtime business leader opened his business consulting firm, FocalPoint, earlier this year. We've heard the phrase 'a rising tide lifts all boats,' and he seems to want to live that out by helping others succeed.

Last week, Mr. Richard Bieker called about his wife's death. I saw the unfamiliar area code of the number he was calling from and wondered if it was another spam phone call. I answered anyway, and instead of a recording telling me how I had some tax debt to pay or business financing I was qualified for, I heard a shaky voice tell me about his wife's death. She grew up here, and he wasn't sure how to get her obituary into our pages.

I get these calls and emails often. I've even helped people write obituaries.

Invariably, though, I'll share my condolences with them right before saying, "Bye," followed immediately by "Have a good day," before letting them go.

Cringe.

From Dubois County with love.
