Issue #

From Dubois County

Happy Friday, Reader,

My son is driving in tonight so we can float the Blue River tomorrow.

We used to drag him on these trips as a sulking teenager, but now, he's calling us to plan a trip. He can't wait to go. I can't either.

We were those parents who always forced him to go hiking, biking and kayaking with us. He'd sulk a bit sometimes, but he regularly came back with some perfect stick or rock that had to join his growing collection of odds and ends.

Though he moved out more than a dozen years ago, among the items we still have is one large stick deemed too perfect to discard in the attic of our yard barn.

I move it around every time I get up there for the Christmas decorations. It's just a stick, I think, before gingerly placing it in another secure spot to ensure its safety until the next attic interlude.

We don't know the stick's history before he decided it was THE STICK for that certain hike, but after he found it, it became a regular accessory for jaunts in the woods around our house. It was even broken when a rambunctious friend decided to throw it, and yes, it's been repaired.

As an extension of my mind's eye into those fun moments with him in the woods, I guess I can't get rid of it.

Plus, maybe he still wants it.

Today, we published an interview with Senator Daryl Schmitt regarding the local funding changes outlined in Senate Bill 1. There is a lot of confusion, and with only six months under his belt as a senator, Schmitt is spending time with all the taxing units in his district to help them understand the legislation.

There is also a story about a new travel agency in Dubois County, Travel by Design. Brandon Ferguson and Landen Weidenbenner started it up after years of planning their own trips.

Have a great weekend.

From Dubois County with love.

Matthew and Amy Crane

Hey Reader, Tonight's a busy night for me. I have an interview at 5 p.m. for a new business in town, and then I will attend the Property Rights Alliance meeting at the Schnitzelbank at 7 p.m. I also attend a bible study once a month with a group of about nine other guys, and that is tonight as well. We have...

I picked up Matt Haig's "The Life Impossible" and have enjoyed it so far. It's a bit of an upturn from my last two reads. Both were by David Joy, whose books have very little joy in them, though...
